Automate, innovate and transform with the Cloud

Automation, Innovation and Transformation (the CMD Solutions pillars) are the key components to creating a successful IT operation that underpins a profitable business. Many organisations have spent a lot of time and money searching for the essential ingredients for success. Cloud technology now provides the means to achieve the ultimate business productivity recipe.

The evolution of Cloud technology is set to provide our clients with opportunities to transform their IT operation. It’s an exciting prospect for our business to be at the forefront of this revolution. In a series of three posts, I’ll elaborate further on our three pillars, starting with automation.

Automation There is nothing new about people trying to realise greater efficiency within their business operation by automating repetitive tasks. For decades organisations have been adopting newer technology to either replace manual tasks or to improve on operational processes that may have already been digitised.

There is currently a huge increase in the level automation being adopted by businesses moving to Cloud based technology. Platforms such as AWS offer technology services designed to be easily integrated, and provide opportunities to introduce automation to areas of technology that previously didn’t make sense. One such area is the domain of Infrastructure management and in particular Windows based servers.

Unix/Linux developers have been using batch scripts and code to automate repetitive administration tasks for decades however there hasn’t been as much interest in applying the same level of automation to Windows based environments because until relatively recently it was a lot more difficult to automate GUI (Graphical User Interface) based systems. This has completely changed and it is now possible to apply the same automation and CI/CD (Continuous Deployment/ Continuous Integration) methods that are used in Unix based environments. By combining tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, Jenkins and Powershell, it is possible to use the same CI/CD tool chain to administer a Windows based environment.

Why do we care about automation?

It is more efficient to automate a task than to repeatedly perform the same steps over and over again. Where you save time you save money as long as the time saved is used for higher value purposes. Automating tasks also reduces the rate of errors or failures thus improving service availability to the business users. Systems can be improved to become more resilient, because IT staff are spending less time on the low value manual tasks which allows the IT team to focus on improving the system and driving profitability initiatives.

At CMD Solutions we are passionate about Cloud technology and the transformation opportunity that it offers businesses of all sizes. Automation is at the forefront of enabling organisations to achieve the full benefit of migrating to Cloud based services.
